Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Friday 10.02.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
In the alpine in the eastern part of the region, it may be easy to trigger avalanches in the fresh wind slabs. Less snow in the mountains west of Svolvær, but small avalanches in the fresh wind slabs are possible.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 9. February 2023

Mountain weather

Thursday 9. February 2023

15 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l Thursday night. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the evening. -5 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 10. February 2023

8-12 mm precipitation. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -9 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
